YOU'RE MAKING THINGS WORSE! 5 Common Skincare Mistakes

Updated: Sep 8, 2023

If you're wanting to achieve your skincare goals, it's important to understand how to properly care for it. These simple, yet common mistakes could be the culprit for temperamental skin that can't ever seem to get right. Don't worry, you're not alone! I've also been guilty of incorporating these bad habits in my skincare routine due to lack of knowledge. However, once I became an esthetician I was intent on understanding the skin. To my surprise, the very things I did to care for my skin ended up being the BIGGEST No No! Avoid these mistakes and see a clear improvement in your skin.

1. No Sunblock

Sunscreen is NECESSARY for any skincare routine, regardless of time of day, seasonal changes, or ethnicity! That's right, even black will crack without the proper sun protection. 90% of fine lines/wrinkles can be attributed to environmental damage such as sun exposure. Sunscreen is designed to protect from UVA/UVB rays which can lead to skin burns, cancers, and undesirable lines/wrinkles, dark spots, and blemishes.

Sunscreen should be at least 30 SPF and reapplied every 2 hours for ultimate protection.

2. Popping Pimples

I know, the last thing you wanted to hear huh? Popping pimples might be hard to resist, but this will only spread the bacteria creating an even worst outbreak by pushing the infected pus deeper into the pore and onto the skin. It'll also delay the natural healing process and impair the skin's barrier, leaving you with those permanent pesky dark marks you can't wait to get rid of. The best way to get rid of stubborn pimples is applying ice, acne spot treatment, regular facials, and PATIENCE!

3. Hot Showers

I totally agree with you -- You can't go wrong with long, hot relaxing showers.. EXCEPT, when it comes to cleansing your face. Hot water can strip the face/body of natural oils resulting in dry skin that can exacerbate certain skin conditions, such as eczema. Washing your face while showering can also lead to the possible transference of residue of oils, bacteria, and dead skin cells, if using the same towel for all body parts or washing your hair simultaneously. It's recommended to wash with tepid water which helps aids in circulation.

4. Over Exfoliating

Exfoliation helps keep the skin silky soft and smooth by buffing away and removing dead skin cells. Your skin cells naturally sheds around every 30 days. This step should be included in every regimen at least 2-3 per week. Over-exfoliation can lead to tiny tears in your skin resulting in a rash-like texture, uneven tone, or dry skin leading to breakouts.

5. Skipping Moisturizing

We all have to do it! Moisturizing is an important step to any skincare routine, regardless of skin type(s). That's right, even oily-prone skin needs moisture! Proper moisturization keeps the skin hydrated and replenishes oil after cleansing. A daily moisturizer is necessary to maintain your skin's barrier and prevent environmental damage.
